In Thailand is één op zes inwoners tewerkgesteld in de toeristische sector. In een ruimer kader blijkt dat 60% van de inwoners van Thailand afhankelijk is van inkomsten die rechtstreeks gelinkt kunnen worden met de toeristische sector.
Het spreekt voor zich dat de coronacrisis dus een stevige impact laat op de Thaise economie. Uit schrik dat Thailand toeristen zal verliezen aan andere landen die sneller vaccineren zet de toeristische sector de regering hoe langer hoe meer onder druk.
Zo geven Minor International and Asset World Corporation, twee zwaargewichten van de lokale toeristische sector, aan dat ze bereid zouden zijn mee te investeren in het (snel) vaccineren van hun personeel.
